The Art of Cupping Therapy
Cupping is a centuries-old healing practice rooted in traditional Chinese medicine. It involves placing specialized cups on the skin and creating a vacuum inside the cup—either through heat or suction—to gently draw the skin and underlying muscle into the cup. This therapeutic suction increases blood flow, reduces muscle tension, and promotes the body’s natural healing processes.
How Cupping Works
When the suction is created, it lifts the skin and superficial muscle layer, improving circulation to the targeted area. This increase in localized blood flow brings nutrients and oxygen to tissues, helping reduce inflammation and relieve pain.
In some treatments, cups are moved across the skin while maintaining suction—a technique known as gliding cupping. This method provides a deep, soothing stretch to muscles and fascia, often resulting in noticeable stress and pain relief.

What to Expect During a Session
To allow cups to glide smoothly, a gentle lubricant is applied to the skin. This technique minimizes discomfort and reduces the likelihood of bruising. However, some temporary marks or discoloration are normal. These are not painful and typically fade within 3 to 5 days.
The suction is created using heat: air inside the cup is warmed to reduce its density. Once the cup is placed on the skin and the air cools, the pressure drops, creating a vacuum that draws the skin upward. The cups may feel warm and stimulating, and the sensation is generally described as relaxing and relieving.
Cupping in the Spotlight
Cupping gained worldwide attention during the 2016 Olympic Games, when many athletes—most notably gold medalist Michael Phelps—appeared with circular marks on their backs and shoulders. Phelps praised cupping for helping him recover quickly from intense workouts and competition.
Since then, cupping has become a favored tool among professional athletes, dancers, and fitness enthusiasts looking to ease muscle fatigue and enhance recovery.

Complementary to Acupuncture
Cupping is often used alongside acupuncture to boost therapeutic results—especially for musculoskeletal issues like back and shoulder pain. The combination provides a powerful, drug-free approach to pain management, inflammation reduction, and deep relaxation.
